Head of Department of Environmental Engineering, IITR, Prof Absar Ahmed Khan has been quoted as saying “Tests conducted by our scientists and experts revealed that water of the river Ganga from Devprayag to Har ki Pairi falls under ‘A’ category defined by Central Pollution Control Board. This means that water is fit for drinking. The water also contains no faecal coliform bacterial in MPN/100 ml sample and has a low concentration of biochemical oxygen level below 3 mg/Litres.”

This has been a result of 22 drains which otherwise passed effluents in the water, being sealed due to the lockdown.

Perhaps it depends on who the PM is. Mr Modi may treat it as a joke. He had recently said:”cartoons do not hurt but heal“.

During WW II, a man was arrested in London for calling Winston Churchill a fool.The next day in the House of Commons, the opposition members were ready to roast the government for this.

“Are we living in a police state”, they shouted, “where we cannot call the PM a fool”?

Please come out with your guess of how Nehru, Indira, Morarji, Atal might have reacted.

I have assumed that Narsimha Rao and Manmohan Singh would not have heard somebody say it. Atal might have come out with a poem, after a pause, long enough for us to think that he was going the Manmohan way. Others?

An incident from his court room life:

Abraham Lincoln was sitting in a court and whispering something to the person next to him, while waiting for his case to be called. Another case was being heard. All of a sudden, Lincoln’s neighbor burst out in uncontrolled laughter.

Judge (banging his gavel): “How dare you laugh in the Court?”

The Man: “My Lord, (pointing to Lincoln), he told a joke and it was so funny, I could not contol myself.”

Judge(sneering): “Non sense, You could not control yourself! You are fined 10 Dollars. Sit down, before you are hauled for contempt.”

Judge (turning to Lincoln) haughtily: “What was the joke, anyway?”

Lincoln repeated the joke.

The Judge went into un-controlled laughter.

Judge (after regaining composure): “The fine is waived!”

RENT, WAGES, CORONA & SENIOR CITIZENS-LAW to RESCUE

While tons of tears have been shed for migrants, everybody has ignored his own parents & grand parents. While they face medical bills and fatal risks, their 3 sources of income: Rent, Interest & Stock Market have all been hit.

Thankfully, JUDICIARY, HAS COME TO THEIR RESCUE, and quashed most orders issued by The Govt of India, in this matter.Politicians, always aware of their vote banks, losing nothing from their own well lined, pockets; had taken no time to announce that tenants need not pay rents and factory owners must pay wages. Govt orders in both these matters stand quashed.

DELHI HIGH COURT ON LIABILITY OF TENANTS

Delhi High Court has upheld the liability of tenants to pay rents, if they continue to occupy the premises.

APEX COURT ON LIABILITY OF FACTORY OWNERS

The Supreme Court has quashed the order relating to payment of wages for the period offices remain closed.

The orders are not in senior citizen context. But the rental matter affects a lot of senior citizens. Likewise, the wages issue affects a lot of senior citizens running small businesses. This post concerns them alone. So far as the humanitarian angle is concerned, the Courts have left it for the parties to mutually settle.

I had gifted this book to my son on one of his birth days and family thought it was a stupid thing to give. Those who read this will be wiser & understand that the Chinese are not stupid, we as a nation might be.

COVID DEATH-STATISTICS GETS PERSONAL:

An IIT Kgp class mate, Sh Ashok Singh, sent me the story as quoted verbatim, below: At his wish, I am posting it, for people to know.

Quote: “I lost my beloved father-in-law to COVID-19 on 22nd May. He was 64. Let me share some facts which are very critical for the govt. and the public in general to know so that no other precious life is lost.

Chain of events:- 11th/12th May: He got fever of 98-99 (mostly normal) – 13th/14th May: Fever increased to 100+ with mild sore throat (we got a bit worried)- 15th/16th May: Fever increased to 101+ with mild throat.- 17th/ 18th May: This is when we decided to get the tests done. However someone told that if fever >100 persists for 5 days or more, only then the test should be done. We were hesitant but since dad insisted we waited till 18th May. In the meanwhile, fever remained the same.

Since he was in Delhi and we were in Chandigarh, we tried umpteen number of labs (including some big names like lal/SRL etc) for home collection (since we didn’t want to expose him to others in case he had covid). No lab was ready to come home.

Then came the much glamorized Arogya Setu app from where we got a lab “City Xray and Scan, Tilak Nagar” who were kind enough to come and test at home. – 18th / 19th May: He was tested and it was “Negative”.

Big sigh of relief! But the fever didn’t go down. In fact, it wasn’t going down even after having Crocin ! – 20th May: Fever persisted and we consulted a doctor who told us to get other tests done to check the cause of fever. At night, he started feeling heaviness in breathing but he didn’t tell us. –

21st May: Fever persisted and breathlessness remained. This is where he told us and was shifted to a hospital. Hospital was hesitant to take him since he had covid symptoms but since we had a negative report, they took him and started examinations and tests (including covid test again). His sugar levels were abysmally high and were out of control.-

22nd May: He was put on ventilator. Covid reports this time was “Positive”. – 22nd May: Since he was a covid positive, the hospital wanted to shift him to a covid hospital for which they asked “us” to find a hospital. Challenge doesn’t end here, we also needed an ambulance with ventilator which wasn’t there. We tried almost all hospitals including govt hospital LNJP and got only one answer that ventilators are not available!! –

22nd May (9.45 pm): We went to the ICU to check on him and got to know that we lost him! (heartbreak for all)-

23rd May: We couldn’t see him for the last time also! My mom in law is in quarantine alone!! So are we!

In this time of grief.The central govt. was saying how well they have managed covid. State CM, PMO India PMO India Arvind Kejriwal said in a press conference that Delhi is well prepared as it has 250 ventilators and no hospital can deny covid patients.

I don’t know about 250 ventilators but we couldn’t find even a single one that night!!!”

Three engineers and three accountants are traveling by train to a conference. At the station, the three accountants each buy tickets and watch as the three engineers buy only a single ticket. “How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?” asks an accountant. “Watch and you’ll see,” answers an engineer.

They all board the train. The accountants take their respective seats, but all three engineers cram into a restroom and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, “Ticket, please.” The door opens just a crack and single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on. The accountants saw this and agreed it was quite a clever idea. So after the conference, the accountants decide to copy the engineers on the return trip.

When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the engineers don’t buy a ticket at all. “How are you going to travel without a ticket?” says one perplexed accountant. “Watch and you’ll see,” answers an engineer. When they board the train, the three accountants cram into a restroom and the three engineers cram into another one nearby. The train departs. In order to help the needy, orders have been issued to the effect that rent may not be demanded & wages paid.Prime facie, it is a great social welfare measure but it ignores the payer, who is often a senior citizen.

The income of almost all senior citizens is from rent, bank interest and stock market.Interest rates have been hit and the stock market has collapsed to the extent of causing heart attacks.The senior citizen is often physically challenged and almost always paying medical bills and insurance premiums, If his premium is missed, his policy will not be renewed because of his age.If he is unable to pay utility bills, utility company will waste no time in disconnecting.Thereafter, he may find re connection physically impossible.

It is a matter of deep regret that not a single utility company or insurance company has declared a moratorium on payment of bills.

In the event of getting the virus, the senior citizen will most likely die and he is the most stressed person today. With all the existing constraints, the senior citizens are attempting to tie up loose ends. It is a mistake on the part of the Govt to burden them with a cut in their current income. In fact, the Govt should come out with a re assuring package for them.

The young politicians and the administrators should remember that they too have to see this day, one day. .

I feel it has become advisable to declare a state of emergency, impose a curfew, enforced by the Army/CRPF, in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities of our country, and in certain, more congested localities of these cities, they need to have ‘shoot at sight’ orders. Tier 3 cities and the rural areas can well be policed, as being done now.Prospective mischief makers should be taken into preventive detention.Home guards should be called in.
Soft pedaling at this stage, will lead to a free for all situation, threatening our civilized order and the very existence of our nation. We are facing a situation as serious as the one Britain faced in the years leading to 1939.Let us not be Britain under Neville Chamberlain or the USA under Donald Trump..
We have the precedent of many countries doing this currently..Even otherwise, unprecedented situations call for unprecedented measures and the time to dither and soft pedal appears to have gone.–It is my personal opinion without any intent to create panic.I want my country to live on safely.

A BASELESS PIZZA

INSPIRED BY the NEWS of a CORONA INFECTED PIZZA DELIVERY BOY:

Seeing the news (upper picture), I am posting my recipe as below-It might interest a few Pizza lovers:-
Step 1-Take a microwave tolerant quarter plate (about 20 cm across)
Step 2-Spread raw Spinach leaves all over it and repeat until you have 4 layers of the leaves
Step 3-Take a couple of boiled potatoes and cut them into flat, circular slices. Spread the slices onto the spinach to form one or two layers.
Step 4- Take a slab of Amul butter and grate about a quarter of it using a hand grater-sprinkle the grated butter, here and there on to the layer of potatoes. Qty of butter is upto you..
Step 5- Take a couple of onions and cut them into circular slices.Spread the slices onto the spinach to form one layer.
Step 6-Take Tomato Sauce or Chilli tomato sauce (as per your liking) and sprinkle it onto the layer of onions,
Step 6- Take raw Ginger,Raw Garlic, Raw Green Chilies and Raw Coriander leaves, cut them all up into small pieces and sprinkle the mix onto the layer of tomato sauce.
Step 7- The pile on the dish should be about 20 mm thick, measured from the surface of the plate
Step 8-Put the plate in the Microwave Oven and cover it. Heat it with full heat, for 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
Step 9- Take Mozzarella cheese-also called Pizza cheese, grate it using a hand grater, keeping the grater over your semi cooked dish so that the grated cheese covers the entire dish. Quantity is again up to you.
Step 10- give the assembly full heat in the microwave oven for about 40 seconds.
You will now have what is shown in the lower picture,
It is ready to eat.
No base, no delivery of corona with the delivery boy..

Here is my take away from a talk Richard Horton, Chief Editor of Lancet gave over the Times of India Channel:
1. No vaccine is likely to be in the market before Dec 2020 and
this date is the optimist’s optimistic best.
2. Hydroxychloroquine doesnt work. Nothing else works.
3. All news of medicines doing wonders is experimental.
4. Social distancing works
4. Lock downs work but should be minimum 10 weeks-that is-for
India-upto 7th May minimum. If lifted before hand, there is a
rebound & the results will be worse than before.
5. 10 weeks period is prescribed because it takes that long for
case numbers to go down to a level that causes a
manageable rebound
6. What can be done-it is God sent disaster like a Psunami or
Earthquake. You educate people to cope and learn to
live with it.It will take its toll.
He was very, very positive that the choice before mankind is between the Devil and the Deep Sea. Extended lock down has its issues but the alternative will land you in a worse scenario. Men better not be deluded into a false sense of wellness.

The month after the planet month can be designated “NATURE TOURISM MONTH” so every body can holiday and see for himself, the benefits of the shut down.

Mankind is hurtling towards a precipice in its mad rush to “DEVELOP”.

Yudhistra was asked by the Yaksha-‘What is the biggest wonder on earth?’

The lock down could have been ordered the day we had less than 10 patients but “the greatest wonder on earth” was at work. Now it is a case of better late than never.

WORDS MUTATE LIKE VIRUS:
CONDONE>CONDEMN>CONDOM:
This happened years ago. We delayed the execution of an order and requesting favour from the customer, I dictated;”There were circumstances beyond our control and the delay in execution may kindly be CONDONED” .

Passing through my beautiful steno, there was a mutation.What she innocently, sent to the customer was: “……the delay may kindly be CONDEMNED”.The customer, another IIT-ian, doubled with laughter and his good mood worked in our favour.

It is a very timely mutation. It is to remind Modi Ji to include this item in free food distribution lists, without any religious selection. Peter Maddocks has listed multiple uses (101 to be precise) of this item (mask, gloves etc.). Moreover, studies have shown a strong co-relation between power failures and baby booms. Experts say lock down may have similar results. It is feared that the good part of the work being done by the virus may be undone, with long term consequences.

This post is prompted by another post on my time line, where I find this word has undergone a 2nd mutation-this time to CONDOM.

For the sake of completeness, the 4th cartoon shows yet another variant where CONDEMNED has replaced CONSUMED- English teachers(of Chinese origin), might have been aware of this lurking mutant, though-I was not.

They pay millions to film Stars and Cricketers-who dont even pay taxes.The cricketers even cheat you by fixing matches, whereas poor engineers and doctors line up for the post of a peon. The media too, goes ga-ga over the former and cares 2 hoots for the latter.

When a disaster strikes, it is the latter who do all the work. Remember the rescue of kids from a cave in Thailand-a miracle braught about by Doctors and Engineers-it was a football team they rescued!

Even now, Engineers will make the ventilators, Doctors will treat, Politicians will deliver speeches written by others, and collect commissions, Corporate Honchos will make tax deductible donations of the order of <0.01% of their holdings, film stars will lend their made up faces to campaigns and perhaps charge for it. This kind of humanity deserves this kind of virus.

GREED DOES NOT PAY-A LESSON FROM WUHAN
For years, countries have transferred their manufacturing to China in greed of cheaper goods from a totalitarian state controlled economy, allowing their own manufacturing to disappear. In 1969, we made Integrated Circuits.After 50 years, we dont even make a table lamp.Software wont replace a ventilator.

I hope this virus will teach our people that when a calamity falls, every body is on his own and globalization doesn’t work.I hope the politicians learn that there is no free lunch.China gives goods cheaper as state policy for long term political gains with the aim of world dominance.

Had it been a war, instead of virus, things would have been fatal for countries without their own manufacturing base.-then you wouldn’t have got even sub standard masks.

In that scene, more than lives, you would lose your freedom.

LIVES LOST IN VIRUS WOULD HAVE SERVED A PURPOSE IF THAT LESSON IS LEARNT.

SALVIA is the plant for that place. It does well even under a bridge. A farmer purchased an old, run-down, abandoned farm with plans to turn it into a thriving enterprise. The fields were grown over with weeds, the farmhouse was falling apart, and the fences were broken down. 

During his first day of work, the town preacher stops by to bless the man’s work, saying, “May you and God work together to make this the farm of your dreams!”  

A few months later, the preacher stops by again to call on the farmer.  Lo and behold, it’s a completely different place.  The farm house is completely rebuilt and in excellent condition, there is plenty of cattle and other livestock happily munching on feed in well-fenced pens, and the fields are filled with crops planted in neat rows. 

“Amazing!” the preacher says. “Look what God and you have accomplished together!” 

“Yes, reverend,” says the farmer, “but remember what the farm was like when God was working it alone!”

MORE ON ORCHA-ABOUT BETWA

Orcha is located on the banks of Betwa-a 600 kM river that rises in the Vindhyachals (Hoshangabad in MP) and flows north east to join the Yamuna (near Hamirpur in UP).For more than half of its path, it tumbles along, rocky terrain & could be fun rafting.So far away from the Himalayas, unexpectedly, its waters are clear and blue.

A little known river, short in length, ‘long’ in beauty-beautiful like a ‘violet by a mossy stone, half hidden from the eye…”

ORCHA

FROM A TRIP TO ORCHA
ORCHA is a heritage town practically hidden from view, near Jhansi in Madhya Pradesh, 450 kM from Delhi. BUNDELKHAND RIVERSIDE is a heritage hotel there-a kind of fairy like place one sees in dreams. Apart from rare natural beauty, the town is full of well preserved Hindu forts and temples and it is a local belief that Lord Rama visits the local temple there.

DACOITS vs DEVELOPMENT

The road we took to Delhi, from ORCHA in MP, cut across the famous ravines of CHAMBAL River, where, dacoits like Man Singh, Abhey Singh once roamed. DACOITS have since gone; (perhaps turned politicians) and replaced by DEVELOPMENT.
The dacoits lived in harmony with nature, let wild life flourish; while ‘development’ has come by its sacrifice. Pictures from 1 to 4 show the landscape that the dacoits left behind and the 5th one shows what ‘development’ is doing to it-the bridge cost a million but with degraded environment, the river chose to dry up.
Hence the question came to me: which is better?-dacoits or development?

A VILLAGE OF CANALS

Netherlands has a village named GIETHOORN which is called “Venice of Netherlands”. It has no roads and only canals which are negotiated by boats fitted with noiseless electric engines. The village website, giethoorntourism.com, says that “the loudest sound you can normally hear is the quacking of a duck or the noise made by other birds”.
Delhi motorists may find it quite hard to drive around in boats here-not because boats are not motor cars, but because, I guess, the boats there, are not fitted with horns.

A DRAPERY OF FLOWERS

Bignonia venusta, common names orange showers, golden showers, flaming trumpet, is a great vine to grow to cover a wall, a sloping roof or a pillar. there is just one catch-it requires day long sunshine. I planted it as column and have it for 3 years but it has never flowered-big trees around allow barely an hour of sun in the winters.

Bob, an industrial engineer, gave a lecture on ergonomics to a group of factory workers. After covering all the finer points of maximizing efficiency in repetitive tasks, he concluded his lecture with a note of caution. “Don’t try these techniques at home.”
“Why not?” asked somebody from the audience.
“I watched my wife’s routine at breakfast for years,” the engineer explained. “She made lots of trips between the fridge, stove, table and cabinets, often carrying a single item at a time. One day I told her, “You’re wasting too much time. Why don’t you try carrying several things at once?”
“Did it save time?” the guy in the audience asked.

Bob, an industrial engineer, gave a lecture on ergonomics to a group of factory workers.  After covering all the finer points of maximizing efficiency in repetitive tasks, he concluded his lecture with a note of caution. “Don’t try these techniques at home.”

“Why not?” asked somebody from the audience.

“I watched my wife’s routine at breakfast for years,” the engineer explained. “She made lots of trips between the fridge, stove, table and cabinets, often carrying a single item at a time. One day I told her, “You’re wasting too much time. Why don’t you try carrying several things at once?”

“Did it save time?” the guy in the audience asked.

“Actually, yes,” replied the expert. “It used to take her 20 minutes to make breakfast. Now I do it in ten.”

HINDI TO ENGLISH……SHARING A SOLUTION
I have noticed many friends communicate in Hindi but write Hindi language in Roman script.This may be due to lack of proficiency in English or difficulty in typing Hindi on computer key board or both. Reading such posts is also a pain.
I had long litigation with villagers in my Haryana village, regarding my ancestral lands. This required a lot of Hindi typing for the court work.I spent lot of money & time getting Hindi typing from typists in Courts.This was until:I found a solution.
I wish to share this solution with you all.
This will save the writer the pain of typing in Hindi script and save the reader the pain of making sense out of Hindi written in Roman script.
Please visit www.indiatyping.com. Here you write Hindi in Roman script and in a second the site returns it duly typed in Devnagari script.You can then copy and paste.

Example: I type:- Aap kaise hain. Kis party ko jita raheh hain?

I get: आप कैसे हैं किस पार्टी को जीता रहेह हैं ?

Having announced abrogation of the controversial Article 370 that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, the Modi government has fulfilled the long-cherished dream of the founder of Bhartiya Jana Sangh (now BJP) Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who died under mysterious circumstances in a Srinagar prison as a detainee on 23 June 1953 while demanding complete integration of the state with the rest of the country. It has taken 66 years after his death to fulfil his dream of revoking Article 370.

Born in Kolkata, Mukherjee was against the concept of J&K being a state within the state with its separate constitution, flag and prime minister. Mukherjee raised the slogan “Ek desh mein do Vidhan, do Pradhan aur Do Nishan nahi chalenge” (A single country can’t have two constitutions, two prime ministers and separate flag).

Mukherjee was strongly opposed to Article 370, seeing it as a threat to national unity. He fought against it inside and outside the parliament with one of the goals of Bharatiya Jana Sangh being its abrogation. He raised his voice strongly against the provision in his Lok Sabha speech on 26 June 1952. He termed the arrangements under the article as Balkanization of India and the three-nation theory of Sheikh Abdullah.

11 अगस्त 1908 को सुबह छह बजे खुदीराम बोस को फांसी के फंदे पर झुलाया जाने वाला था । रात को उनके पास जेलर पहुँचा । जेलर को खुदीराम से पुत्रवत् स्नेह हो गया था । वह 10 अगस्त की रात को चार रसीले आम लेकर उसके पास पहुँचा ओर बोला ” खुदीराम , ये आम मैं तुम्हारे लिए लाया हूँ । तुम इन्हें चूस लो । मेरा एक छोटा सा उपहार स्वीकार करो । मुझे बड़ा संतोष होगा । ” खुदीराम ने जेलर से वे आम लेकर अपनी कोठरी में रख लिये और कह दिया कि ” थोड़ी देर बार मैं अवश्य इन आमों को चूस लूंगा । ” 11 अगस्त को सुबह जेलर फाँसी के लिए खुदीराम बोस को लेने पहुंच गया । खुदीराम तो पहले से ही तैयार थे । जेलर ने देखा कि उसके द्वारा दिए गए आम वैसे – के – वैसे रखे हुए हैं । उसने खुदीराम से पूछा ” क्यों खुदीराम ! तुमने ये आम चूसे नहीं । तुमने मेरा उपहार स्वीकार क्यों नहीं किया ? ” खुदीराम ने बहुत भोलेपन से उत्तर दिया ” अरे साहब ! जरा सोचिए तो कि सुबह ही जिसको फाँसी के फंदे पर झूलना हो , क्या उसे खाना – पीना सुहाएगा ? ” जेलर ने कहा – ” खैर , कोई बात नहीं , मैं ये आम खुद उठाए लेता हूँ और अब इन्हें तुम्हारा उपहार समझकर मैं चूस लूँगा । ‘ ‘ यह कहकर जेलर ने वे चारों आम उठा लिये । उठाते ही आम पिचक गए । खुदीराम बोस जोर से ठहाका मारकर हँसे और काफी देर तक हँसते रहे । उन्होंने जेलर साहब को बुद्धू बनाया था । वास्तव में उन्होंने उन आमों का रस चूस लिया था और हवा भरकर उन्हें फुलाकर रख दिया था । जेलर महोदय उसकी मस्ती को देखकर मुग्ध और आश्चर्यचकित हुए बिना न रह सके । वे सोच रहे थे कि कुछ समय पश्चात् मृत्यु जिसको अपना ग्रास बना लेगी , वह अट्टहास करके किस प्रकार मृत्यु की उपेक्षा कर रहा है ।

वह कौन सी मस्ती थी कैसा उनका अद्भुत ज्ञान था वास्तव में आप जैसे महापुरुषों का जीवन चरित्र जानकर हृदय गदगद हो उठता है और बार बार एक ही प्रार्थना मां भारती से निकलती है कि मां यह मातृभूमि रत्नगर्भा है और खुदी राम जी जैसे लोग इस मातृभूमि के रत्न है ! ऐसे महापुरुष बार-बार हमारी मातृभूमि और संस्कृति में अवतरण ले ऐसी मंगल कामना है ! एक बार पुनः हृदय से नमन !

BAJI RAUT (1926-1938)

उड़ीसा के ढेंकनाल ज़िले के नीलकंठपुर गांव में बाजी राउत का जन्म हुआ। बहुत कम उम्र में ही बाजी ने अपने पिता को खो दिया और उसकी माँ जैसे-तैसे घर चलाती थीं।

उस समय, ढेंकनाल का राजा शंकर प्रताप सिंहदेव था, जो गरीबों की कमाई का शोषण करने के लिए विख्यात था। बाजी की माँ भी उसकी नाइंसाफी की शिकार थीं।

उड़ीसा इतने दबाव में था कि अब विद्रोह का समय आ चूका था। ढेकनाल के बैष्णव चरण पट्टनायक के प्रयासों से यह संभव भी हुआ। लोग उन्हें प्यार से ‘वीर बैष्णव’ कहकर पुकारते थे। उन्होंने लोगों को इकट्ठा कर ‘प्रजामण्डल’ संगठन की स्थापना की और राजा के विरुद्ध विद्रोह आरम्भ कर दिया।

प्रजामण्डल में बच्चों की भी एक विंग थी – बानर सेना, जिसमें बाजी भी शामिल हो गया।

पट्टनायक ने रेलवे में पेंटर की नौकरी ले ली, ताकि वह रेलवे पास पर एक जगह से दूसरी जगह पहुंच कर लोगों को जागरूक कर सके और साथ ही कटक में राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के लोगों से मिल कर, उन्हें ढेंकानाल की स्थिति से अवगत कराया जा सके।

पट्टनायक ने मार्क्सवादी नीतियों को पढ़ना शुरू किया और स्थानीय बुद्धिजीवी हर मोहन पट्टनायक के साथ मिलकर ‘प्रजामण्डल आंदोलन’ शुरू किया जिसका मतलब था ‘जनता की पार्टी।’

यह आंदोलन धीरे-धीरे लेकिन स्थिर रूप से बढ़ा। ऐसे में अन्य राजाओं ने भी ढेंकानाल के राजा को समर्थन दिया ताकि इस विद्रोह को दबाया जा सके। यहां तक कि आस-पास के प्रांतीय राजाओं ने सेना भी भेजी। अंग्रेजों ने भी मदद की और कोलकाता से एक ब्रिटिश सेना की टुकड़ी भेज दी। अंग्रेजों ने 250 बंदूकधारियों को भेजा और उन्हें ढेंकानाल के राजा ने अपना पूर्ण समर्थन दिया।

लोगों के आर्थिक स्तर को नीचे गिराने से बेहतर और क्या हो सकता था? शंकर प्रताप ने लोगों पर ‘राजभक्त कर’ या ‘वफ़ादारी कर’ लगाया। और जो भी लोग इस कर को भरने में असमर्थ थे उनके घरों को शाही हाथियों द्वारा रुंदवाया गया। इतना ही नहीं उनकी बाकी सम्पत्ति भी जब्त कर ली गयी। लेकिन इस अत्याचार ने सभी को साथ ला खड़ा किया और आंदोलन मजबूती से बढ़ने लगा।

इससे तंग आकर राजा ने इस आंदोलन के नेताओं पर वार करना शुरू किया। उसने वीर बैष्णव की सारी पैतृक सम्पत्ति हड़प ली। इसके अलावा 22 सितम्बर 1938 को हर मोहन पट्टनायक के घर पर रेड की गयी, जहां अन्य आंदोलनकारी भी थे। सभी को गिरफ्तार किया गया। लेकिन पट्टनायक वहां से भी बच निकले।

हालांकि, गुस्से से भरे अधिकारी पट्टनायक की खोज में लगे रहे और उनको खबर मिली कि पट्टनायक भुबन गांव में है। 10 अक्टूबर, 1938 को इस गांव पर अंग्रेजों व राजा ने हमला कर दिया। लोगों के घरों को तहस-नहस कर उन पर पट्टनायक का पता बताने के लिए अत्याचार किये गए। लेकिन किसी ने भी जुबान नहीं खोली।

पर रेड के बाद से ही अफवाहें जारी थी कि पट्टनायक ब्राह्मणी नदी में कूदकर गांव के उस पार चला गया है। सेना तुरंत गांव के दूसरी तरफ पहुंची जहां उन्हें केवल कुछ स्थानीय लोग मिले और वो भी ऐसे लोग जो किसी भी कीमत पर अपने नेता को कुछ नहीं होने देना चाहते थे।

गुस्साई सेना ने गोली-बारी शुरू कर दी और मौके पर ही दो व्यक्ति, रघु नाइक और कुरी नाइक की मौत हो गयी। भीड़ आक्रामक होने लगी और सेना भागकर ब्राह्मणी के पास नीलकंठपुर पहुंची।

उस समय घाट पर बाजी की ड्यूटी थी और वह सो रहा था। सेना ने बाजी को उन्हें नाव से नदी पार कराने के लिए कहा। यह 11 अक्टूबर 1938 की दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण रात थी। बाजी को उस दिन नाव की रखवाली का काम मिला था।
