The month of January is always remarkable being the beginning of the New Year. This year, this month has been marked by protests in the country on various issues. Leaving that aside, it is more to be remebered as we lost two great men this month earlier-Homi Bhabha-Father of India’s atomic program on 24th Jan 1966 and Mahatma Gandhi-Father of India on 30th Jan, 1948. tributes to the Mahatma from Nehru, Einstein, etc are well known. Find below a few lesser known tributes from other great men.

WHO IS SMARTER?
Bob, an industrial engineer, gave a lecture on ergonomics to a group of factory workers. After covering all the finer points of maximizing efficiency in repetitive tasks, he concluded his lecture with a note of caution. “Don’t try these techniques at home.”
“Why not?” asked somebody from the audience.
“I watched my wife’s routine at breakfast for years,” the engineer explained. “She made lots of trips between the fridge, stove, table and cabinets, often carrying a single item at a time. One day I told her, “You’re wasting too much time. Why don’t you try carrying several things at once?”
“Did it save time?” the guy in the audience asked.
“Actually, yes,” replied the expert. “It used to take her 20 minutes to make breakfast. Now I do it in ten.”

REMEMBERING MAHATMA GANDHI
“OH, INDIA, DARE TO BE WORTHY OF YOUR GANDHI”
So said Nobel Laureate PEARL S BUCK: Her full tribute-
“He was right, he knew he was right, we all knew he was right. The man who killed him knew he was right. However long the follies of the violent continue, they but prove that Gandhi was right. ‘Resist to the very end’, he said, ‘but without violence’. Of violence the world is sick. Oh, India, dare to be worthy of your Gandhi.”
A man of War: GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR, C-in-C, Allied forces in Japan, had this to say:
“Nothing more revolting has occurred in history of modern world than the senseless assassination of this venerable man. That he should die by violence is one of those bitter anachronisms that seems to refute all logic.
In the evolution of civilization, if it is to survive, all men can not fail eventually to adopt his belief that the process of mass application of force to resolve contentious issues is fundamentally not only wrong but contains within itself the germs of self-destruction.
Gandhiji, however, was one of those prophets who lived far ahead of the times.”
LORD RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH said- “When asked what attribute he most admired in human nature, Mahatma Gandhi replied, simply and immediately, ‘Courage’. ‘Nonviolence’, he said, ‘is not to be used ever as the shield of the coward. It is the weapon of the brave.”
GEORGE BERNARD SHAW was brief::
“It shows how dangerous it is to be too good.”
