The post below in the context of Vinod Yadav, an IITD-ian’s attempts to establish a Library in his village. He worked for many years, before his wish came to fruition. The Library was finally established by funding from ONGC, Ltd. under a project called VAPUSI, initiated by IIT Delhi Alumni Association, while Sh Atul Bal, was its President.
LEADING UPTO PAHARI VILLAGE-JUNE 2:
If one quality Vinod Yadav has-it is perseverance-he successfully dragged an unwilling, lazy, aged me, to all these dusty Haryana villages with tongue twisters for names – Kapriwas, Pahari, Koond, Majra Shwaraj, Sidhrawali, Hansaka, Dharuhera, Masani, Tatarpur, tatta ta ra…;…; be it 10 or 45 deg C; be it 4 AM or 9 PM; rain or shine;…………
Finding me all dressed up early mornings, spouse used to say: “Oh no, not again?!”
The second guy she never fails to blame is poor, innocent, Atul Bal. To quote her “He comfortably rode with you in your ac car with ice box, coke & chips to Pahari, while bechari Jyotsna & I, slogged it out in that rickety, fatiture, IITD bus, without food or water, only to reach Pahari after Khattar had left and Shamiana pulled out ! Huh!!- you should come to my IIT Roorkee functions and see how things are done”
YOU BETTER BE MORE ORGANISED TOMORROW, YOUNG MAN!!
She may be polite to you but will kill me.
Jokes aside, wish you success and very special congrats to Atul Bal, ex President IITDAA who began it all.
(Context: This post is in the context of inauguration of a rural library by Prof Ram Gopal Rao, Director IITD), in Vinod Yadav‘s native village Pahari, fixed for June 2, 2019,

QUIZ-WHICH IS THE RIGHT SIDE UP?
I had taken the picture below en route from Delhi to Khajuraho by Road in Ambassador car. It was before the advent of Digital Cameras and the car is mentioned for the sake of historical perspective.
A few years back, I digitized all my old pictures for storage and retrieval. While fooling around with picture editing, I had inverted it by mistake and saved it.
Sometimes I wonder, which is the right side up. Now that I have great photographers, IT experts and IIT brains for my friends; it came to me that one of them might come up with the answer.
Dont ask me for the answer, as, I do not know.

My reaction:
Not 15% but only 15 acres of this planet is owned by me in Haryana where for 10 years I am trying to build a Phoenix, Arizona style Desert Garden. Alas! I am stalled by the greed of a local BJP politician for my land.
Best wishes to Hansjorg Wyss-hope Trump does not go the BJP MLA way!

ON THE LOSS OF A DEAR FRIEND
Yesterday, I lost a dear friend: Jugal Kishore Joshi
He was a famous astrologer who possessed “Arun Sanhita”-ancient Sanskrit Parchments containing a wealth of knowledge.
We knew each other since our youth and shared many intimate experiences and had a deep personal bond.I knew his Father too Sh Haveli Ram Ji.
Looking at a horoscope, he would know practically everything that was there to be known about the person. If the person had limited means, he would not accept money.
Two Japanese who were bosom friends came to him and he told one of them that he had a “keep” unknown to his wife. He denied and his stunned bosom friend supported him saying that “he would have known were it so’.Joshi Ji gave more details and the man confessed, leaving his bosom friend dazed.
An East European who came to him for consultation regarding love life and pretended to be poor. He told him that “you are lying-you have more money than Putin”. He confessed saying that he travels incognito as a poor man because he has many enemies. He was a Mafia Don.
A famous Indian media Czar made an appointment with him to film his reading of horoscope and brought his TV crew-lights,recordings, camera and all. On the appointed day he gave his own horoscope as a test case. Joshi Ji had one look at it and said that let the recording be done with some other person’s horoscope. The media person insisted that he go ahead. Joshi Ji politely hinted that there are several private things in there. The pompous Czar persisted in his own horoscope being read out. Joshi Ji said, “Ok, as you like” and began reading and as the skeletons-esp dealing with his womanizing began to tumble out; he frantically shouted, “Cut.Stop.Cut!” to his giggling crew. A new recording was thereafter made using another horoscope, which was subsequently aired.
Politicians at the highest level came to him but he stood against corruption, arrogance and high handedness. He never lost a chance to give them a piece of his mind.He told one such person to his face that “you murdered your wife-get off”
We both knew and we all know, that we all have to go at the appointed hour.Yet, it becomes difficult to contain the moisture that wells up in the eyes.

FADING IMAGES FROM FOGGING MEMORY
This picture was taken in Delhi Zoo, several years ago, before digital cameras were introduced. I have scanned my old prints for safe keeping and what you see below is such a reproduction.
We live & will die with a nagging question mark– will our great grand kids get the thrill of seeing Hippos in real life? More likely their Ph D thesis will be reconstructing Hippo from preserved DNA.

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF A GARDENER’s SPOUSE:
“She dug the plot on Monday, the soil was rich and fine
But she forgot to put the dinner on, so out we went to dine.
She planted roses Tuesday, she says they are a must.
They really were quite lovely, but she forgot to dust.
On Wednesday it was daisies they opened with the sun,
All pinks and whites and yellows, but the laundry wasn’t done.
The poppies came on Thursday all bright and cherry red,
I guess she really was engrossed, she never made the bed.
It was violets here on Friday in colours she adores,
It never bothered her at all, the dirt upon our floors
Saturday I hired a maid, I’d not admit defeat,
She can garden all she wants now and the house will still be neat
It’s nearly lunchtime Sunday I cannot find the maid,
Oh I don’t believe it. She too, is out there with her own spade!”

ENGINEERS, NOTHING NEW HERE, BUT,
It is good to (acu)-puncture our puffing egos, now & then:
“A priest, a lawyer and an engineer are about to be guillotined.
The priest puts his head on the block, they pull the rope and nothing happens — he declares that he’s been saved by divine intervention — so he’s let go.
The lawyer is put on the block, and again the rope doesn’t release the blade, he claims he can’t be executed twice for the same crime and he is set free too.
They grab the engineer and shove his head into the guillotine, he looks up at the release mechanism and says, “Wait a minute, I see your problem……”

HELP ME PLEASE:
Himanshu Tyagi, shared a link which has a personal relevance, for me, and I pray the WYOMING BILLIONAIRE not meet my fate, as below :-
NOT 15%, but ONLY 15 Acres of this planet, is owned by me–inherited from my great grandfather who bought it from the King of Patiala in 1885 AD in a Govt auction. For years I have been trying to establish a Mini Desert Garden/Nature reserve there on the lines of Desert Garden in Phoenix, Arizona.
A greedy local politician–MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly)-wants to grab the land and has thwarted all my efforts, by using all types of means-unfair and foul.
I request help from anybody who has connections to the top most politicians at Centre (Delhi) or State (Haryana). My cause is lawful & just.My paperwork is in order.
Because of the nature of the matter, private communication, only, by facebook messaging or by phone +91-9717595253 or by email romtekindia@gmail.com is requested.

STREET SMART KID !
Seeing me working with IIT’s various rural schemes- my spouse reminds me of this 20 year old story, 1st published in the Reader’s Digest.
6 kids are discussing their future.
1st kid: “I am going to join IIT and become an engineer.I will offer technology for free, to better the lot of the poor villagers.”
2nd Kid: “I am going to join AIIMS and become a Doctor. I will work for free in the rural areas to help the poor villagers.”
3rd kid: “I am going to join the Bangalore Law School and become a Lawyer. I will offer free legal advice to the poor villagers.”
4th kid;”I am going to join the IIM and as your boss, manage you guys, so you work in unison for the benefit of the poor villager.”
5th kid: “I am going to become an IAS officer-that way I will control you all and ensure corruption free administration to help the poor villagers
6th kid is thinking and had to be prodded into disclosing its aspirations.
Finally–
The 6th kid:” I think I will become a villager”
(For the benefit of those living outside India: IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology; AIIMS stands for All India Institute of Medical Sciences, IIM stands for Indian Institute of Management-said to be the best Institutes; and IAS stands for Indian Administrative Service-the premier government service, in India. The pictures are of IIT Alumni Association Office))

Posting news originally from Paul Bowen about China
SADLY INDIA COULD NOT DO IT-1947 to 2019:-
Why? Because the bitter truth, perhaps, is:
1.We have defeated the IIT system-Institutes of National Importance– by using it as a stepping stone for non engineering applications.
(example: Many join IAS, IPS, IIM after IIT—-many join IIT with THAT as an objective)
2.Our society values money, influence, over work.
(example: companies with large Sales/Civil servants are more awarded, more respected, than companies/personnel with large technical base).
3.Our politicians follow policies in favor of commission agents and not creative professionals-
(while paying lip service to the latter)
4 Our educational system teaches learning by rote and not by hands on working
5.We prefer desk jobs to those on shop floor.
6.We place expedience over excellence, quantity over quality, price over performance, short term over the long .
7.We do not accept criticism as a means to change ourselves for the better.
(IIT=Indian Institute of Technology, IAS=Indian Administrative Service,IPS=Indian Police Service, IIM=Indian Institute of Management)
